Down the River

                                                  The Volta Region

The Volta region is a long vertical strip of land in the most Eastern Part of Ghana.  It is known for its lush rolling hills and valleys overlooking Lake Volta, waterfalls, rain forests and beautiful beaches that border the Atlantic.

We became aware of village on a island whose only electricity is generated by "kid power".  A system of electricity-generating merry-go-rounds  was  created at BYU .  While children play, energy is converted into electricity stored in batteries, which then charge lanterns for the children to study at night.  So we went to explore.

This is one of the boats for our group.  We stuffed way more people in a flimsy, cracked and weathered looking refugee-like boat than I am sure were even allowed.  It felt like the boat  would crack open any minute and dump us into the river.

Sights along our float down the river.
